Elephants

Elephants are kind and sensitive mammals. They care for one another. If one elephant is hurt, the others will move more slowly. This is so the hurt elephant can keep up.

Elephants are very big. They have thick, gray skin. Elephants have long noses called trunks. They also have big, floppy ears. Most elephants have tusks.

Wild elephants mostly live in Africa. Some also live in parts of Asia. Elephants live in savannas. They also live in tropical forests.

Elephants mainly eat grasses and fruits. They also eat roots and bark. They use their trunks to eat. They can eat 300 pounds (136 kg) of food in a single day.

Elephants live in groups called herds. The oldest female leads her herd. She is called the matriarch. Female elephants usually have one baby. Elephants can live to be 50 years old.
