Clown Fish

Clown fish are known for living within animals called sea anemones. Clown fish have mucus on their skin. They rub the mucus on the anemone’s tentacles. This keeps the anemone from stinging them.
The most famous clown fish have orange bodies and three white stripes. But clown fish can be other colors, too. Some clown fish have black edges on their fins.

Clown fish live in tropical oceans. They are in coral reefs. They swim in and out of the anemones’ tentacles. Clown fish help keep the anemone clean. The anemone protects the clown fish from predators.
Clown fish eat plankton. They also eat algae. The fish swims out of its anemone to look for food. Sometimes clown fish eat parasites that are on their anemone.
Clown fish lay eggs near rocks or anemones. When the eggs hatch, the babies are on their own. They find a new anemone to live in. Clown fish live for six to ten years in the wild.
