Eels

Eels are snake-like fish. But they are not related to snakes. There are approximately 800 species of eels. Some eels are shy. Others are very aggressive. Eels have existed for 100 million years.
Eels have long bodies and one long fin. Their heads are pointed. Their bodies end in a powerful tail. An eel’s skin is smooth and slimy.

Eels are generally found in the warm, tropical ocean waters. Some eels live in freshwater. Eels like to be sheltered. They live in any holes and cracks they can find.
Eels hunt at night. They find their food using their good sense of smell. Eels will eat whatever they can find. They might eat fish, octopus, or shrimp. They will even eat small birds and frogs.
Female eels lay eggs. Baby eels go through many stages before they are full grown. Some species swim in freshwater while they are growing.
