Grasshoppers

Grasshoppers are insects. They have six legs. Their two back legs are very strong. These legs allow grasshoppers to jump very far and very high.

Most grasshoppers are green or brown. Some have markings. The markings can be black, red, or yellow. Grasshoppers have five eyes. They have two antennae.

Grasshoppers live where there is food, sunlight, and dirt. Many live on grasslands. They also live in mountains, deserts, and gardens. They can migrate when it gets cold.

Grasshoppers mostly eat plants. They often eat grass. They also eat seeds, leaves, and bark. Some grasshoppers move and eat together in large groups. This is called swarming.

Female grasshoppers lay eggs in holes in the dirt. The eggs hatch in the spring. Baby grasshoppers are called nymphs. They do not have wings. Grasshoppers live approximately four months.
