River Otters
   
River otters are also called freshwater otters. There are 11 different species of river otters. They are smart and playful animals.
River otters have long bodies and tails. Their fur is brown. It is thick and waterproof. Otters spend a lot of time grooming to keep their fur clean. They have webbed feet.

River otters live both on land and in freshwater. Usually, they stay in dens. Sometimes they use beaver homes as their own.
River otters are meat eaters. They often eat animals such as fish or crabs. River otters also eat crayfish, mussels, and frogs.
Baby otters are born in dens. They are called pups. A pup stays with its mother for approximately one year. River otters live eight to nine years.
