Garter Snakes
   
Garter snakes are vertebrate reptiles. There are many different types of garter snakes. They have a great sense of smell.
Garter snakes have dense bodies. Males are shorter and thinner than females. They come in many colors. Some are gray. Others are brown or black. Garter snakes usually have three stripes.

Garter snakes live in Central America. They also live in North America. You can find them in forests and wetlands. Garter snakes often live in people’s gardens as well.
Garter snakes eat small animals. Sometimes they eat frogs and toads. They also eat earthworms, slugs, and snails. Garter snakes even eat salamanders and birds.
Garter snakes usually mate once per year. This usually takes place in the spring. Females are pregnant until summer. Garter snakes usually live approximately two years in the wild.
