Bearded Dragons

Bearded dragons are lizards. They have a pouch. It is called a beard. The beard is below their throat. Bearded dragons can puff out their beard and turn it black. This scares away predators.
Bearded dragons are often green, yellow, tan, and red. They have strong tails. Their skin is thick and bumpy. Their heads and bodies have spines on the sides.

Bearded dragons live in Australia. They live in deserts, dry forests, woodlands, and scrublands. They often climb trees or rocks to sit in the sun. This helps keep their bodies warm.
Bearded dragons eat insects and small rodents. They also eat plants. Adults eat small lizards. Their teeth and strong jaws hold the food. They kill or break their food apart quickly.
Female bearded dragons bury their eggs in the dirt. This helps protect the eggs. After the eggs hatch, the bearded dragons live alone. They live for approximately seven years.
