Bird-eating spiders are a type of tarantula. Tarantulas are big spiders. The largest spider on Earth is a bird-eater. It is called the goliath bird-eating spider.
Bird-eating spiders have eight legs and eight eyes. Their bodies are covered in thick hair. Bird-eaters are usually black or brown. Some are colorful.

Bird-eating spiders live in swampy places. They live in forests too. Bird-eating spiders usually live in burrows. Some live under plants and branches.
Bird-eating spiders only rarely eat birds. Still, this is how they got their name. They usually eat insects and other spiders. They eat frogs, lizards, and snakes too.
Female bird-eating spiders lay eggs. After they hatch, babies usually stay near their mothers. Female bird-eating spiders can live for 25 years.
