Butterflies

Butterflies are insects. They begin their lives as caterpillars. Some butterflies have beautiful patterns on their wings.
Butterflies come in all sizes and colors. Their three main body parts are the head, thorax, and abdomen. They all have two large eyes and two antennae. Butterflies also have six legs and four wings.

Butterflies live in many places. You will often find them near flowers and plants. A butterfly moves pollen from flower to flower. This helps plants grow.
Butterflies have a special mouthpart called a proboscis. It looks like a straw. Butterflies use it to drink nectar and plant juices.
All butterflies were once caterpillars. A caterpillar forms a chrysalis. It is like a shell. A lot of changes happen inside. Now it is an adult butterfly. Adult butterflies live from 20 to 40 days on average.
