Caribou

Caribou are a type of deer. They are also called reindeer. Both male and female caribou have antlers. The antlers fall off each year. Then they grow back. No other female deer have antlers.
Caribou have wide, flat hooves. They have two toes. This helps the caribou swim. Caribou have long fur. Even their noses are furry. The noses warm the air they breathe.

Caribou live in northern forests and grasslands. They live in groups called herds. The herds migrate in the winter. Some herds have thousands of caribou.
Caribou eat plants. They eat grasses and shrubs. In the winter, they mostly eat lichen. They use their hooves to dig through snow. This helps them find food.
Baby caribou are called calves. They can stand almost right away. When they are two years old, they grow antlers. Caribou can live up to 15 years in the wild.
