Catfish

Catfish are known for their barbels. They look like the whiskers on a cat. These barbels have taste buds. They help catfish decide whether food is good to eat.
Catfish can be many different sizes and colors. They have flat heads. Their mouths are big. But their teeth are tiny. Catfish have eight fins. Unlike other fish, catfish have skin instead of scales.

Catfish can live in freshwater or saltwater. They always sink to the deep bottom of whatever body of water they live in. Catfish hide in the weeds or under boulders.
Catfish swim along the bottom of their habitat. They shovel through the mud finding food. They eat their food whole. A catfish might eat insects, frogs, or other fish.
Catfish swim to warm water to make a nest for their babies. The eggs hatch after approximately 10 days. Some catfish can live as long as 20 years.
