Hippopotamuses
   
Hippopotamuses are large mammals. They are known for their huge mouths. They can open their mouths very wide. Their teeth can be 20 inches (50 cm) long!
A hippopotamus has a round body. It has short, thick legs. The skin on its legs can be two inches (5 cm) thick. Its head is big. It can shut its ears and nose to keep water out.

Hippopotamuses live in Africa. They can usually be found in lakes, rivers, and swamps. They stand in shallow water. Sometimes they walk along the bottom. A hippopotamus might be in the water for 16 hours a day.
Hippopotamuses eat grass. They use their lips to tug on the grass. At night, they leave the water to graze. They can eat 80 pounds (36 kg) of grass in one night.
Baby hippopotamuses are called calves. Many calves are born underwater. A calf often rides on its mother’s back. Hippopotamuses live in groups. A hippopotamus can live for 40 years in the wild.
