Kangaroos
   
Kangaroos are marsupials. There are six types of kangaroos. The most common types are red, eastern gray, and western gray kangaroos. Kangaroos move by hopping. They hop on both back feet at the same time.
Kangaroos have brown, red, or gray fur. They have small heads with large ears. Their front legs are short. Their back legs are large and powerful. Kangaroos have long tails.

Kangaroos live in Australia. Some kangaroos live in an area called the outback. It is mainly desert and dry grasslands. Others live in forests.
Kangaroos are herbivores. This means they eat plants. Many kangaroos eat grasses. They can survive a long time in the desert without water.
Kangaroos have tiny babies called joeys. A newborn joey grows inside a special pouch on its mother’s belly. Kangaroos in the wild can live from six to 20 years.
