Largemouth Bass
   
Many people like to fish for largemouth bass. The largemouth bass is the most popular freshwater fish for fishing in the United States. But these fish are not easy to hook. Once caught, they are fighters.
The largemouth bass has a large mouth. When the mouth is closed, the fish’s upper jaw extends past its eye. Largemouth bass have a dark green back and silver belly. They have a black stripe along each side.

Largemouth bass live in freshwater. They are most often found in calm water. The first largemouth bass were in North American waters. Now they live around the world.
Largemouth bass eat many things. They eat insects, frogs, and crayfish. They eat small mammals. Sometimes they even eat their babies.
Largemouth bass spawn once a year. A baby is called a fry. When a fry is approximately one inch (2.5 cm) long, it leaves the nest. Largemouth bass live approximately 13 years.
