Leopards

Leopards are the smallest of the big cats. However, they are the most widespread. They can be found anywhere from the deserts of Africa to the mountains of Asia.
Leopards have light fur. Their fur has dark spots. The spots are called rosettes. Some leopards are black. Black leopards are sometimes called black panthers.

Leopards prefer habitats with many trees. They also like to be near water. They are good climbers and swimmers. They often sleep high up in trees.
Leopards hunt mainly at night. They eat fish, reptiles, and small mammals. Leopards are known to drag their prey up into trees. This makes sure no other animals can eat their meals.
Leopards spend most of their lives alone. Mothers and cubs spend the most time together. After about two years, cubs are ready to live on their own. In the wild, leopards can live 12 to 15 years.
