Mosquitoes
   
Mosquitoes are insects. The word “mosquito” means “little fly” in Portuguese. There are more than 3,000 species of mosquitoes around the world.
Mosquitoes have three main body parts. They are the head, thorax, and abdomen. Mosquitoes have six legs and two wings. They have two eyes and two antennae.

Mosquitoes live almost everywhere on Earth. They are often found near lakes and ponds. Mosquitoes are important. They are food for many animals and other insects.
A mosquito has a special mouthpart. It looks like a straw. All mosquitoes eat nectar and plant juices. Only female mosquitoes bite and drink blood. They bite humans and animals.
Female mosquitoes lay their eggs on the surface of the water. It can take 10 to 14 days before the eggs become adult mosquitoes. The length depends on the temperature. Mosquitoes usually live from two weeks to six months.
