Owls

Owls are raptors. All raptors are birds. There are more than 160 kinds of owls. Owls have hooked beaks and sharp claws. Their eyes are large and round. This helps them see well in the dark.
Most owls are brown, gray, or white. Many have spots or stripes. Owls have large wings. Their wing feathers are soft along the edge. The feathers help them to fly quietly. This helps them catch more prey.

Owls do not build nests. They often use nests built by other birds. Many owls nest in trees and buildings. Some owls nest in the ground.
Owls are predators. They catch prey with their strong feet and talons. They eat rodents, insects, and fish. Owls often swallow their prey whole.
Most owls lay three or four eggs. Mother owls sit on their eggs to keep them warm. This is called incubation. Baby owls are called owlets. Owls can live as long as 25 years.
