Piranhas

There are many different types of piranhas. Piranhas are known for their powerful bite. They often swim in groups called schools. This helps keep them safe from predators.
Piranhas have tall, thin bodies. They are covered in scales. Many piranhas have orange or red undersides. They have several stiff fins. Their jaws are strong. Their teeth are sharp.

Piranhas live in South America. They are usually found in fast-moving rivers. Some live in lakes. Some live in streams. Sometimes they live in flooded forests.
Piranhas eat many different foods. They eat plants and insects. They also eat other fish. Piranhas usually hunt alone. Sometimes a group of piranhas will work together to attack large prey.
A female piranha lays approximately 5,000 eggs in an underwater nest. The eggs hatch after as soon as two days. The baby piranhas hide in water plants until they are big enough to hunt.
