Shrimp

There are approximately 2,000 kinds of shrimp. A shrimp’s body is covered in a hard shell. The shell is called an exoskeleton. Some shrimp can change their body color. This helps them hide from predators.
Shrimp have ten pairs of legs. They use five pairs of legs to walk. The other legs help the shrimp swim. Shrimp have eyes, but they do not see well. They use antennae to taste and touch.

Some shrimp live in oceans. Others live in freshwater. They are in lakes and rivers. Shrimp spend most of their lives deep underwater. They live on sand or mud.
Most shrimp eat both plants and animals. Many eat bits of dead plants and animals. Some eat plankton. Some eat parasites from live fish. Shrimp use their short arms to eat.
Shrimp begin as eggs. Females can lay thousands of eggs at a time. When the eggs hatch, they float to the surface. Most shrimp live for one to two years.
