Sturgeon
   
Sturgeon have been around for 135 million years. There are many different types of sturgeon. The species are different colors and sizes. All are big and powerful fish.
Sturgeon are covered in scutes. Scutes are bony plates. They protect the fish like armor. Sturgeon have blunt snouts and no teeth. They have barbels that look like whiskers.

Sturgeon can live in salt water. They can also live in freshwater. They are found in rivers or lakes. Sturgeon often live near coasts.
Sturgeon stir up mud to search for food. They eat what they find on the sea or river floor. This includes fish, crayfish, and clams. Sturgeon swallow their food whole.
Sturgeon start out as eggs. Young sturgeon have sharp scutes. It takes 20 years for a sturgeon to grow. Scientists believe sturgeon can live for over 100 years.
