Toucans
   
Toucans are survivors. Life in South America is not easy for them. New buildings and farms take over their habitats. They are also captured for pets. People like their bright colors.
Most toucans have black or green feathers. Some have other colors. Their beaks are large and colored. They use their large bills to protect themselves.

Toucans live in South America. They can often be found in tropical rain forests. These forests are warm and wet. Some toucans live in cooler forests.
Toucans mostly eat fruit. Figs and cherries are common food. Toucans also eat nuts and seeds. Sometimes toucans eat bugs, frogs, or lizards.
Toucans are social birds. They live in groups called flocks. Most toucans mate once a year. The eggs hatch after approximately 17 days. Toucans can live up to 20 years.
