Trout
   
Trout are fast fish. They have strong teeth. There are many types of trout. There are 10 known species in North America.
Dark spots and tiny scales cover a trout’s skin. Trout have a small, fatty fin near their tails. This fin is called an adipose fin.

Some trout species live in oceans. However, trout mostly live in cool freshwater. Many live in rivers and streams. Some trout live in lakes.
Trout eat many different insects. They also eat fish eggs and small fish. Some eat small crustaceans. Young trout eat mostly plankton.
Female trout dig holes in the gravel at the bottom of streams, lakes, and oceans. They lay their eggs there. Then a male fertilizes the eggs. Baby trout are called fry. Trout live an average of seven years.
