Turtles

There are many kinds of turtles. But all turtles are reptiles. It is believed that turtles have been around for millions of years. That makes them one of the oldest living animals on Earth.
Turtles come in many different sizes. All reptiles have scales and are cold-blooded. But turtles are the only reptiles with shells. Shells act like a shield protecting the turtles from predators.

Turtles live in many different habitats. Some live in deserts. Others live in forests or mountains. Some turtles live in freshwater, swamps, and ponds. Other turtles live in the ocean.
Different types of turtles eat different things. Some turtles only eat plants. Many turtles also eat small animals and insects. Turtles don’t have teeth. They use the hard edges of their mouths to bite down and crush their food.
Both sea and land turtles lay their eggs on land. The female covers her eggs with dirt and leaves. Baby turtles are on their own after they hatch. Some species can live up to 150 years.
